The Britannia coins are a good alternative to Sovereigns, whether the buyer is looking for bullion or proof-grade coins.

The Royal Mint first issued Britannias in 1987, when they were alloyed with copper, giving them a rose-gold colour. Since 1997, they have been alloyed with silver, giving them a brighter, more yellow colour.

Struck to a gold purity of 0.917 and weighing 3.412 grammes, each coin contains 1/10th troy ounce of pure gold.

The reverse features Philip Nathan's breathtaking depiction of Britannia, standing guard at the British shoreline.

This proof-grade 2002 £10 Britannia is supplied encapsulated within a bespoke Royal Mint leather-effect case, together with numbered certificate of authenticity. A maximum of 2500 coins were authorised for worldwide distribution, with 1000 of those being allocated to the four coin sets and the certificate number for this particular coin is 0267.

BRITISH BATTLE OF BRITAIN GOLD MEDAL.
Supplied with the original order confirmation, receipt and certificate from 1965.
6.15 grammes of pure gold.

This beautiful medal was commissioned in 1965 by MetalImport and struck on their behalf by Johnson Matthey. The medal commemorates the 25th anniversary of the Battle of Britain.

The obverse of the medal shows a detailed design of a Spitfire surrounded by the famous Churchill quote:

"Never in the field of human conflict was so much owed by so many to so few".

The reverse of the medal displays the laureated RAF Eagle with Empire crown and lion above, surrounded by the inscription "Commemorating 25 years Battle of Britain". Within, the name of the designer, COLLEY as well as the full .750 (18 carat) London assay office import mark.

On the side of the medal is the original certificate number, matching the issue number on the certificate of authenticity. The medal is supplied in a bespoke box and all original documents pertaining to the initial purchase in 1965 are present, (including the receipt for £7.6.0!), giving unique and proveable provenence to this beautiful medal.

As is to be expected, the medal displays some fine lines resulting from being lovingly polished, but these are minor and not extensive by any means. There is no wear and the design on both sides remains crisp and clear.

The weight of the medal is 8.2 grammes of .750 (18 carat) gold and total fine gold content is thus 6.15 grammes.

CANADA: $200 "MOUNTIE" SERIES GOLD COIN.
1 troy ounce of gold produced to a fineness of .99999 gold, the purest available.
Certified 31.15 grammes of pure gold.

This Canadian 2011 "Mountie" coin is the latest in the series and was commissioned and struck by the Royal Canadian Mint.

The obverse of the medal shows the traditional image of Queen Elizabeth II with, below, the denomination of $200 as well as the year of issue, 2011.

The obverse has a striking image of a Mountie riding a horse at full canter with pennant flying and, below, the inscription:

"FINE GOLD 1OZ OR PUR".

Diameter is 30 mm and the edge is of interrupted serration type.

There are very few coins manufactured in .99999 gold as the process of refinement above .9999 presents many difficulties. Canada leads the way in this process and this coin is a striking example of just how far they have developed their refining processes. The certification on the reverse of the pack makes an interesting read, explaining as it does, definition of the purity of .99999 gold.

The coin is supplied sealed in a rigid blister pack and has a weight of 31.15 grammes of .99999 (24 carat) gold, this giving a total fine gold content of 31.15 grammes (1 troy ounce).

PRICE: £1249 (offers considered).
